Authorities remind public to seek shelter during thunderstorms

POLOMOLOK, SOUTH COTABATO — Tragedy struck on Tuesday afternoon, October 14, 2025, when a 15-year-old student lost his life after being struck by lightning at Purok Kalyong, Barangay Landan, Polomolok, South Cotabato.

The victim, identified as Reo Jay Masalon, a Grade 10 student, was reportedly preparing to roast harvested corn with his parents when a bolt of lightning suddenly struck around 2:30 p.m., amid heavy rain. The powerful strike caused severe burns and injuries that led to his instant death.

A companion sustained minor injuries during the incident. Authorities from the Polomolok Municipal Police Station immediately responded, while the grieving family and relatives of the young victim continue to mourn the sudden loss.

The local government and emergency officials expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and issued a reminder to the public to remain cautious during thunderstorms.

When thunder roars, go indoors. Avoid open fields, tall trees, and metal objects. Stay away from electrical appliances and water sources until the storm has completely passed. Lightning can strike without warning — even from a distance — and being cautious can save lives.
