Tawi-Tawi Province — The Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom), through the Joint Task Force (JTF) Poseidon and the Joint Task Group (JTF) Atlas, turned over portable laboratory equipment to the Rural Health Units (RHUs) of Mapun and Taganak on September 13–14, 2025, in a bid to strengthen healthcare services in some of the country’s most geographically isolated areas.

Brigadier General Romulo Quemado II, Acting Commander of WestMinCom, personally led the turnover ceremony, emphasizing the command’s continuing efforts to extend vital support and services to frontier communities in Western Mindanao.

The donated equipment includes an electrocardiogram (ECG) machine, urinalysis tools, and blood chemistry apparatus. These are expected to significantly boost the diagnostic capacity of local health units, which have long struggled with limited medical resources.

“This endeavor is more than just the turnover of medical equipment—it is a testament to our shared commitment to protect and uplift the lives of our people in the farthest corners of the country. By empowering our health units in Mapun and Taganak, we not only improve healthcare services but also strengthen the resilience of our communities and our troops,” Brig. Gen. Quemado said in his message.

The initiative was carried out in partnership with WestMinCom stakeholders and allies, as part of the commemoration of Maritime Archipelagic and National Awareness Month (MaNaMo). It underscores the role of collaboration in addressing the unique healthcare challenges faced by maritime and frontier communities.

Located in the southern frontier of the Philippines, the island municipalities of Mapun and Taganak often face difficulties in accessing immediate medical attention due to their distance from mainland Tawi-Tawi and Zamboanga City. The new portable laboratory equipment is seen as a crucial step in bridging this healthcare gap for both local residents and security forces stationed in the area.

WestMinCom reaffirmed its commitment to sustain programs that promote the welfare of both the civilian populace and the security sector, stressing that partnerships remain vital in improving lives across Western Mindanao.
