Mati City, Davao Oriental – September 28, 2025
What was meant to be a day of fun turned into tragedy when two brothers from Davao City drowned in a beach resort in Sitio Cotcot, Barangay Lanca, Mati City, on Sunday morning.
The victims were identified as Clarence Torres, 17, and his older brother Gerald Torres, 25, both residents of Barangay Communal, Buhangin, Davao City. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the siblings were declared dead on arrival, leaving their family and community in deep grief.
According to police reports, the Torres brothers were with three companions—Ketchmer Prieto, 22; Klein Balabag, 22; and Harthur Sumundad, 24—who were also swept by the strong current but were fortunately rescued in time. They are now recovering after receiving medical attention.
Witnesses said the group was enjoying a swim when the waters suddenly turned dangerous, pulling them under. Rescuers acted quickly, but the strength of the waves proved fatal for the brothers.
As news of the drowning spread, sorrow gripped their neighborhood in Buhangin. Family members, who had high hopes for the young men, were inconsolable upon learning that Clarence, still in his teenage years, and Gerald, his older brother, had lost their lives together in such a tragic way.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident while reminding the public of the risks of swimming in unfamiliar waters, especially in areas known for strong currents.
What was supposed to be a weekend of laughter and bonding ended in heartbreak—two brothers gone too soon, leaving behind memories of brotherhood and love now drowned in grief.
