PLACER, Surigao del Norte — Soldiers from the 36th Infantry Battalion (36IB), in coordination with units under the 901st Infantry Brigade, recovered three high-powered firearms in the hinterlands of Barangay Hinapuyan, Carmen, Surigao del Sur, on September 10, 2025.

The discovery came after two former members of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG), identified only as alias Rem and Jelo of the Sub-Region Sentro de Grabidad (SRSDG) Westland, surrendered to government forces on June 15 and September 4. Their revelations led to the successful recovery of two M16 rifles and an AK-47 rifle hidden in the area.

Alias Rem admitted that the armed group has been steadily declining in strength, with more firearms than active fighters left in their ranks. He also revealed that they are suffering from a shortage of ammunition and food, leaving most of their remaining members demoralized and incapable of sustaining operations.

Lt. Col. Joselito B. Ante Jr., commanding officer of the 36IB, called on the remnants of the CTG to lay down their arms.

“We urge the remaining CTG members to surrender and reunite with their families. They still have time to choose a peaceful life,” Ante said.

Colonel Manuel Darius M. Resuello, acting commander of the 901st Infantry Brigade, highlighted the role of surrendering rebels in the recovery effort, noting that they will also benefit from government reintegration programs.

“A brighter future awaits our former rebels. Through the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), they will receive financial compensation under the Firearms Remuneration component, helping them rebuild their lives and live without fear or worry,” Resuello said.

Authorities stressed that the continuous cooperation of former rebels is key in dismantling CTG remnants and ensuring peace in Surigao del Sur and nearby provinces.
