ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities in Zamboanga City have successfully resolved the shooting incident in Barangay Culianan on Sunday, August 17, 2025, with both suspects now in police custody, earning commendations from Mayor Khymer Olaso, Congressman Jerry “Totong” Perez, and the Barangay Council of Culianan.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning along San Isidro Street, Zone 1, Culianan, leaving the victim, Rolando Miguel Campo, 33, of Pasobolong, with serious gunshot wounds. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and remains under close observation.

Witnesses identified the assailants as Daniel Perez (gunman) and Ian Perez (driver), who fled on a white scooter after the attack. Hot pursuit operations by the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO), particularly Police Station 4 under PMaj. Melvin Solmayor, led to the arrest of Ian Perez. Later that night, through the coordination of Congressman Perez, Councilor Frederick “Kap Fred” Atilano, and the suspects’ family, Daniel Perez voluntarily surrendered and was turned over to the authorities.

Mayor Olaso, who closely monitored the case throughout the weekend, lauded the police for their swift action, noting that the resolution of the Culianan case came just days after the successful handling of a separate shooting in Barangay Mampang on August 13. During the Monday flag-raising ceremony at City Hall, he condemned the spate of shooting incidents and urged police to further strengthen anti-crime measures.

“I can’t promise to put a stop to crimes but I will exhaust all means to minimize these incidents,” Olaso said, citing illegal firearms and personal motives as persisting challenges. He also expressed satisfaction over a police simulation exercise he conducted, showing that local stations could respond to emergencies within three to five minutes. The mayor vowed continued support for the police through transportation and communication facilities to further improve response capabilities.

For his part, Congressman Perez strongly condemned the attack, stressing that violence has no place in Zamboanga City. He assured the public that he would not tolerate lawlessness, even if it involved his own kin. “No one should ever be above the law,” Perez declared, pledging full support to Campo’s family in their pursuit of justice.

The Barangay Council of Culianan also issued an official statement commending the coordinated efforts of the police, local officials, and community members that led to the immediate resolution of the case. “We reaffirm our commitment to work closely with authorities to ensure peace, safety, and security in our community,” the council said.

The case is now considered solved, with both suspects under police custody. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to uphold peace and order in the city, while officials called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperative in reporting criminal activities.
