Malungon, Sarangani Province — A 65-year-old senior citizen was found dead in a horrifying state early Sunday morning, August 3, 2025, in Purok 3, Barangay Malandag, Malungon, Sarangani Province. The brutality of the crime has shocked the entire community, prompting strong condemnation and urgent calls for justice.
The victim, identified as Miguel Saavidra, a well-known farmer and helpful member of the community, was discovered lifeless in his hut by his employer, Jojo Villasco, who had been waiting for him since the previous day. Villasco recounted that he asked Saavidra to come over for a drink Saturday night, but the latter never arrived. Concerned, he went to check on him the next morning, only to find the elderly man’s bloodied body.
Investigators said the victim sustained blunt force trauma to the head, believed to have been caused by a hard object. Even more gruesome, the victim’s genitals were cut off, burned, and desecrated with a cigarette butt. Authorities also found signs of hack wounds on the victim’s head, suggesting multiple forms of assault. His food supplies, utensils, and personal belongings were ransacked and scattered around the compound.
Purok Chairman Jimmy Velasco likened the brutal killing to the butchering of an animal, expressing deep sorrow over the fate of Saavidra, who was often called upon to help cook during community gatherings and was known for his kindness and helpfulness.
“This is a clear case of inhumane violence. No human being deserves to die in such a cruel and humiliating way. We strongly condemn this act and call on the authorities to bring those responsible to justice,” said Velasco.
Villasco, who remains in shock, described Saavidra as a kind and peace-loving person with no known enemies in the area. “He had no quarrels with anyone. We are baffled as to why someone would commit such a savage crime,” he added.
Authorities say they are now pursuing several leads and persons of interest but have yet to publicly identify any suspect as the investigation is ongoing. Police have not ruled out the possibility that multiple individuals were involved, as there were signs of struggle and restraint on the victim.
The Municipal Police Station of Malungon and local barangay officials are working closely to track down the perpetrators. The community is urged to report any suspicious individuals or activities to aid the investigation.
This heinous crime has sparked fear and outrage among residents of Malungon and the larger Sarangani Province. Local leaders and citizens alike are demanding swift justice, saying the savagery displayed in this act has no place in a civilized society.
As the probe continues, the public is reminded to stay vigilant and stand in solidarity to ensure that such acts of barbarity do not go unpunished.
