August 1, 2025 – Pagadian City

A tragic motorcycle accident claimed the lives of two female students and seriously injured another this afternoon in Barangay Balintawak, Pagadian City.

The victims, identified as Tiffany, 16, a resident of Tiguma, and Jonalyn, 17, were both students of Zamboanga del Sur National High School (ZDSNHS). They were onboard a Honda Click 125 motorcycle driven by their schoolmate Shane, who is currently confined in a hospital with serious injuries.

The three were reportedly riding downhill from Barangay Palpalan when the motorcycle lost its brakes and crashed into a residential home in Purok Sili-3, Balintawak. CCTV footage captured the exact moment of the crash, showing the motorcycle speeding out of control before slamming into the house of Jona Saurno.

Tiffany was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Jonalyn died on the spot. Shane, the driver, survived the crash but remains in critical condition.

According to initial reports, there were no classes at the time due to the celebration of Buwan ng Wika, and the students had gone out for leisure. Authorities believe that lack of vehicle control and the absence of safety gear contributed significantly to the fatal outcome.

Public Safety Warning: Wear Helmets, Follow Safety Standards

In light of the fatal incident, authorities have issued a strong and urgent reminder to the public—especially to young riders—to strictly adhere to road safety protocols.

“This tragic loss of young lives could have been prevented,” said a responding officer. “Wearing helmets and checking your motorcycle’s condition before riding are not optional. These are basic safety measures that save lives.”

Responders from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), led by Richard Fabria, arrived at the scene promptly but were unable to save the victims.

Officials also confirmed that none of the three students were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Basic Motorcycle Safety Reminders for All:

  • Always wear a helmet—both the driver and passengers
  • Check brakes and tires before riding, especially on steep roads
  • Do not overload the motorcycle
  • Drive at a safe speed, especially on downhill slopes
  • Avoid riding without a license or proper training
  • Observe traffic rules and regulations at all times

The Pagadian City Police and CDRRMO are continuing their investigation, and the community is mourning the loss of two young lives filled with potential.

Let this be a painful but important lesson for all. Safety should never be compromised—one mistake on the road can end a life in seconds.

The Mindanao Sentinel sends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and stands with the community in calling for stronger awareness and responsibility among young riders.
