GUIPOS, Zamboanga del Sur — Four clans in Zamboanga del Sur have formally committed to peacefully resolve their differences following a community-based conflict settlement facilitated by the 53rd Infantry (MATAPAT) Battalion of the Philippine Army on September 25, 2026.
The settlement was held at the battalion headquarters, Camp Major David P. Sabido in Poblacion, Guipos, bringing together clan representatives, local government officials, Muslim affairs representatives, and military personnel in an effort to prevent disputes from escalating and to strengthen peaceful relations among the concerned communities.
Among those who attended were Labangan Municipal Mayor John Raymond C. Yu; Mustapha P. Piang, head of the Provincial Muslim Affairs Office; and Lt. Col. Aldwin G. Cortez, commanding officer of the 53rd Infantry (MATAPAT) Battalion, along with representatives and members of the clans involved in the dispute.
A key development during the settlement was the signing of an agreement involving the Wahab, Daligdigan, Abas, and Palwa clans.
The agreement signified the clans’ commitment to peacefully address their differences and maintain harmony within their respective communities. Rather than allowing disagreements to develop into prolonged disputes, the parties formally recognized dialogue and mutual understanding as mechanisms for resolving their differences.
The settlement also highlighted the importance of involving community stakeholders in addressing conflicts at the local level. The participation of clan representatives, local government officials, Muslim affairs authorities, and the military provided a platform for the parties to discuss their concerns and work toward an understanding acceptable to those directly involved.
For communities where family and clan relationships can play a significant role in local disputes, such mechanisms can provide an avenue for preventing disagreements from worsening and affecting broader community relations.
The activity underscored that conflict resolution is not solely a matter of security intervention. It also requires the participation of community leaders and the willingness of disputing parties to communicate, understand one another and commit to peaceful solutions.
The 53rd Infantry (MATAPAT) Battalion said it will continue coordinating with local government units, community leaders and other stakeholders in supporting peaceful conflict-resolution initiatives in Zamboanga del Sur.
The battalion’s continued engagement reflects an approach that combines security efforts with community participation, particularly in addressing disputes before they escalate into wider conflicts.
The clan agreement in Guipos represents one such effort, with the concerned parties formally expressing their commitment to preserve peace and strengthen harmonious relations in their communities.
