KORONADAL CITY – July 23, 2025 — The City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) of Koronadal has raised the alarm over a significant surge in Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) cases, with reported infections rising by a staggering 274% compared to the same period last year.

From January 1 to July 19, 2025, the city recorded a total of 131 HFMD cases — a sharp increase from 35 cases in 2024. Of the total, 67 are male and 64 are female, with most cases affecting children.
HFMD is a highly contagious viral illness commonly seen among young children. Its symptoms include fever, sore throat, painful mouth sores, and skin rashes or blisters on the hands, feet, and mouth. Although often mild, health officials warn that complications can arise if not properly managed.
Preventive Measures Urged
In response to the spike, CESU is emphasizing the importance of preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease:
- Strict Hygiene Practices
- Encourage frequent handwashing, especially before eating and after using the toilet.
- Regularly clean children’s toys and personal items.
- Keep Sick Children at Home
- Children showing symptoms should not be sent to school or taken to public places.
- Parents are advised to seek immediate medical consultation.
- Practice Social Distancing Among Children
- Avoid letting kids play in crowded areas such as indoor play zones, especially during an outbreak.
- Strengthen Children’s Immune System
- Ensure children get enough rest, nutritious food, and stay well-hydrated.
- Visit the Health Center Promptly
- Early consultation can help prevent complications and reduce transmission.
The CESU reiterated that cooperation from parents, schools, and the broader community is vital in containing the outbreak. For more updates and public advisories, residents are encouraged to follow the official page of CESU Koronadal.
“Let us work together to protect ourselves, our families, and our community,” CESU said in its statement.
