CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — May 30, 2025 — The city marked a significant step in the fight against HIV and AIDS today with the formal opening of the NEST (Nurturing Emphatic Support and Treatment) Wellness Hub, a primary HIV treatment center located at the City Health Office. The launch coincided with the observance of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial and Mobilization.
The event gathered representatives from various government agencies, partner organizations, stakeholders, and individuals united in the advocacy of supporting people living with HIV (PLHIV) and preventing further spread of the virus.
City Councilor Maria Lourdes S. Gaane, Vice Chairperson of the City AIDS Council, emphasized in her message the dual importance of the occasion—not only remembering lives lost to HIV/AIDS but also reinforcing the ongoing campaign to fight the disease through education, testing, and support services for PLHIV.
City Health Officer Dr. Rachel Daba-Dilla underscored the role of public education in reducing stigma and discrimination against individuals living with HIV/AIDS. She expressed hope that increased awareness would lead to a more compassionate and supportive community.
Dr. Ronald A. Romano, physician and clinic manager of the NEST Wellness Hub, expressed gratitude for the strong backing of Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy, Vice Mayor Jocelyn Bebot Rodriguez, the 20th City Council, and the Local AIDS Council. Their support, he said, was instrumental in making the hub a reality.
The NEST Wellness Hub offers a one-stop-shop for the prevention, testing, treatment, and management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. It was officially certified by the Department of Health Region 10 as a primary HIV treatment hub on April 2, 2025.
Importance of the NEST Wellness Hub
The opening of the NEST Wellness Hub is especially timely and critical as cases of HIV and AIDS continue to rise across the country, particularly among young people. With many new infections reported in the 15–24 age group, the hub serves as a vital access point for confidential, youth-friendly, and stigma-free health services.
By integrating comprehensive HIV care under one roof—counseling, testing, treatment, and continuous support—the hub not only addresses the medical needs of individuals but also plays a pivotal role in raising awareness and changing public perception. It strengthens the city’s response to the epidemic and empowers young people to take charge of their sexual health without fear or judgment.
