Davao Region, Philippines – June 4, 2025 — Mt. Apo Natural Park (MANP), the country’s highest peak and a vital ecological sanctuary, is officially closed to trekking and camping activities for three months starting June 1 to August 31. This annual “Off Season” aims to provide time for ecological rehabilitation, disaster risk reduction, and biodiversity protection.

The temporary closure, based on Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) En Banc Resolution No. 08, series of 2021, is part of a long-term effort to preserve the mountain’s fragile ecosystems and ensure the sustainability of tourism in the area.

Mt. Apo is not only a towering landmark at 2,954 meters above sea level—it is also a key biodiversity area that hosts numerous endemic and endangered species, including the Philippine eagle. Human activities, particularly trekking and camping, can lead to soil erosion, littering, and wildlife disturbance. The seasonal break gives the environment time to recover from such stresses.

Environmentalists and park officials emphasize the importance of this closure as a “breathing space” for Mt. Apo and its wildlife. “The off-season is crucial for trail recovery and to give native flora and fauna a chance to regenerate without human interference,” said a representative from the DENR-MANP office. “We urge the public to respect the closure and take this time to reflect on our responsibility as stewards of nature.”

Aside from protecting biodiversity, the break also reduces risks of accidents and forest fires during the rainy season, a time when trails become slippery and vulnerable to landslides.

As the majestic Mt. Apo rests, park authorities call on mountaineers, local communities, and stakeholders to support the annual closure and advocate for responsible eco-tourism. Giving nature this quiet time is a simple but powerful act that helps ensure future generations can still enjoy the awe-inspiring beauty of Mt. Apo.
