Maigo, Lanao del Norte – In a bid to strengthen peace and security in the region, three remnants of the Dawlah Islamiyah (DI)-Sibugay criminal group voluntarily surrendered to the 5th Mechanized Infantry (Kaagapay) Battalion on May 8, 2025.

The surrenderers—identified as Mohammad Yasser Manalao Bibit, Saanoden Arumpac Muslimen, and Samsoden Mangoda Maruhom—formally laid down their arms and turned over two high-powered firearms in a ceremony held at the battalion headquarters in Barangay Claro M. Recto, Maigo.

The activity was spearheaded by Lieutenant Colonel Neil F. Piad, Commanding Officer of the 5th Mechanized Infantry Battalion, who lauded the former combatants for abandoning the armed struggle and choosing to return to mainstream society.

According to military officials, the surrender was the result of continuous coordination between the Philippine Army, local government units, and other stakeholders in encouraging armed elements to embrace peace.

Lt. Col. Piad assured the former DI members of government support through the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), which offers reintegration assistance and livelihood opportunities for former rebels and violent extremists.

“The decision to surrender is a courageous step toward peace and reconciliation,” he said, urging other remaining members of lawless groups to follow suit for the sake of their families and communities.

The 5th Mechanized Infantry Battalion reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the public and fostering a peaceful environment in Lanao del Norte.
