Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat – In a vibrant tribute to the city’s farming and fishing communities, the Office for the Agricultural Services (OAS) successfully held its inaugural Fishing Tournament on May 20, 2025, at Purok San Jose, Barangay San Pablo. The event was a major highlight of the city’s celebration of Farmers and Fisherfolks Month, drawing enthusiastic participation from local anglers representing various barangays.

At the break of dawn, participants took their places along the fishing banks, equipped with traditional fishing gear and high spirits. The event was not just a test of skill and patience but also a celebration of sustainable and indigenous fishing methods. Spearheaded by City Agriculturist Ivan Gerry G. Arzagon, R. Agr., MPA, and Tournament Director Roland G. Lagsub, R. Agr., the tournament emphasized techniques that avoid electricity or harmful fishing devices—reinforcing the city’s commitment to environmentally safe and culturally respectful practices.

“This activity is more than just a competition,” said City Agriculturist Arzagon. “It is a recognition of the fisherfolk’s crucial role in ensuring local food security and preserving our cultural identity.”

The festive atmosphere continued into the awarding ceremony, where Barangay Rajah Muda emerged as the tournament champion. Barangay Baras claimed the 1st Runner-Up title, while host Barangay San Pablo took home 2nd Runner-Up honors.

Special recognitions were also awarded to teams for their unique achievements:

  • Biggest/Heaviest Fish Caught – Barangay San Pablo
  • First Catch Award – Barangay San Antonio
  • First Team in the Weigh-In Line – Barangay Baras

The overwhelming support for the tournament has inspired plans to make it a permanent fixture in Tacurong City’s annual Farmers and Fisherfolks Month celebration. As participants left with smiles and stories to share, the event proved not only to be a competition but a reaffirmation of the city’s agricultural roots and the enduring spirit of its people.
