GENERAL SANTOS CITY — In a landmark step toward strengthening environmental stewardship in Region 12, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 12 and SM City General Santos signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on May 21, solidifying a shared commitment to sustainability, public education, and climate action.
The agreement outlines collaborative efforts in implementing environmental education campaigns, eco-friendly exhibits, community advocacy events, and widespread information dissemination activities aimed at raising environmental awareness and encouraging community involvement.
DENR-12 Regional Executive Director Atty. Felix S. Alicer emphasized the value of partnering with a major private sector player like SM. “We recognize SM’s influence as a vital platform for public engagement and we aim to amplify our programs through this partnership—from communication, education, and public awareness campaigns, to events centered on a behavioral change approach. We will work hand in hand with SM to turn this agreement into action and a catalyst of meaningful change,” he said.
The ceremonial signing, held at SM City General Santos, officially marked the launch of a long-term collaboration for environmental sustainability and community empowerment in the Soccsksargen region.
The MOU was signed by RED Atty. Alicer and Mr. Lester R. Tantoco, SM Mall Regional Operations Head for Mindanao 3. Joining them were Engr. Hermon L. Hernandez, SM City General Santos Mall Manager; Engr. Efren B. Carido, Regional Director of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) 12; Dr. Ali M. Hadjinasser, Chief of the Conservation and Development Division; and Maria Elena F. Acierda, Marketing Manager of SM City General Santos.
With DENR providing technical guidance, educational resources, and expert support, and SM offering its expansive reach and public-facing platforms, the partnership is expected to significantly boost efforts to inspire climate responsibility among individuals, schools, and local communities.
The Role of the Private Sector in Environmental Protection
This partnership underscores the critical role the private sector plays in advancing environmental goals. As major influencers and resource holders, businesses like SM can serve as strategic allies in scaling up environmental awareness, integrating sustainability into mainstream activities, and reaching a broader audience that government agencies alone may not effectively engage.
By aligning business operations with environmental objectives, companies can help bridge the gap between policy and public action—turning shopping malls, corporate spaces, and commercial platforms into hubs for ecological education and action.
As climate change and ecological degradation continue to pose urgent threats, such collaborations between government and the private sector are essential in fostering a culture of shared responsibility and collective action.
With the MOU now in motion, communities across Region 12 can look forward to engaging, informative, and transformative initiatives that promote environmental integrity—one campaign, one exhibit, and one community at a time.
