COTABATO CITY – Health officials have confirmed two cases of Monkeypox (Mpox) in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), with six more individuals currently under monitoring for suspected infection.
During a press conference earlier today, BARMM Health Minister Dr. Kadil Sinolinding Jr. reported that the confirmed cases are from the municipalities of Sultan Kudarat and Datu Odin Sinsuat, both located in Maguindanao del Norte.
The six suspected cases are being closely monitored and are residents of the following areas:
- Kalanganan II, Cotabato City
- Mahad Salman, Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Norte
- Bulalo, Sultan Kudarat
- Poblacion Tunggol, Datu Montawal
- Poblacion, Parang, Maguindanao
- Mother Bagua, Cotabato City
Health authorities have already initiated contact tracing and implemented isolation protocols to prevent further spread of the virus.
Monkeypox is a viral infection characterized by red blisters, rashes, and skin lesions similar to chickenpox. It is contagious and can spread through direct physical contact, body fluids, and contaminated personal items. Common symptoms include fever, body pain, headaches, fatigue, and skin rashes.
In light of the situation, the Ministry of Health – BARMM urges the public to remain calm but vigilant. Dr. Sinolinding advised residents to seek medical consultation if they experience any symptoms associated with Mpox.
The MOH-BARMM is also reinforcing the following preventive measures:
- Avoid physical contact with individuals showing symptoms;
- Practice regular handwashing and maintain clean surroundings;
- Do not share personal items such as towels or clothing;
- Immediately visit the nearest health center if symptoms like fever, rashes, or joint pain occur;
- Voluntarily isolate if signs of Monkeypox are present.
Minister Sinolinding assured the public that health surveillance, treatment, and specimen collection continue across rural health units. All confirmed and suspected cases are currently in isolation and receiving appropriate medical care.
