Matalam, Cotabato – Twenty-one women members of the Datu Ladayon Bantay Kalikasan Association People’s Organization underwent specialized training on grafting and pruning techniques, facilitated by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Matalam on March 13, 2025. The training took place in Barangay Datu Ladayon, Arakan, Cotabato.

Kenneth B. Fernandez and Isidro Locario from the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMAG) in Arakan led the hands-on workshop, demonstrating proper methods and fundamental grafting techniques for fruit trees. They also provided essential guidance on suitable pruning practices for cacao trees, emphasizing the importance of maintaining tree health and improving yield quality through effective pruning strategies.
This initiative aimed to enhance the participants’ skills in sustainable agricultural practices, fostering improved local horticultural productivity while promoting environmental conservation efforts. As part of the training, grafting tools were distributed to participants to support their continued learning and application of the techniques.
Beyond technical agricultural skills, the training also contributed to the economic participation and empowerment of women in the community. By equipping women with practical knowledge, they are better positioned to take active roles in local agricultural production, challenge traditional gender roles, and advocate for their rights. Such initiatives are vital in advancing gender equality and building a more resilient and equitable society.
The training underscores the growing recognition of women’s contributions to agriculture and environmental stewardship, reinforcing their essential role in sustainable rural development.
