ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) has strongly condemned the spread of disinformation by an alleged Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) member regarding recruitment into the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
In a statement issued on March 2, 2025, OPAPRU refuted claims made by Sharief Edjal S. Alimuddin, who declared himself as the Governor General of the MNLF. During a press conference held on February 27, 2025, in Cabatangan, Zamboanga City, Alimuddin alleged that former MNLF members were being recruited into the AFP through a special process.
OPAPRU asserted that these claims were baseless and warned that such misinformation could create fear and uncertainty among the people of Zamboanga City. More importantly, the agency stressed that these statements pose a threat to the 1996 Final Peace Agreement (FPA), a historic deal between the Philippine government and the MNLF.
“The Philippine government has made it clear that there is no special recruitment or reintegration program for MNLF members into the AFP or the Philippine National Police (PNP),” OPAPRU stated. “Anyone wishing to join these institutions must undergo the standard recruitment process and meet the required qualifications.”
To address the situation, OPAPRU has reached out to the MNLF leadership under Chairman Nur Misuari. In response, the MNLF issued a statement disassociating itself from Alimuddin and clarifying that he was not authorized to hold the gathering or speak on behalf of the organization.
“Mechanisms are in place for engaging the MNLF in a peaceful and constructive manner,” OPAPRU emphasized. “Any activities outside these established channels are considered unauthorized.”
Authorities have been alerted and are currently investigating reports of alleged recruitment under the guise of a reintegration program. The agency also urged the public to remain vigilant against false promises and deceptive propaganda from individuals or groups misrepresenting the MNLF’s interests.
“We call on everyone to protect the integrity of the GPH-MNLF peace process and not be swayed by misinformation, especially from those soliciting money in exchange for government services or positions,” OPAPRU concluded.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to upholding peace and ensuring that any reintegration or recruitment efforts remain transparent and in accordance with government policies.
