CITY OF KORONADAL, South Cotabato – In celebration of this year’s International Day of Forests (IDF) on March 21, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) led an extensive tree-planting activity across the Soccsksargen region. A total of 1,870 tree seedlings were planted in various sites, marking a significant step towards environmental conservation and sustainability.

Atty. Felix S. Alicer, DENR-12 Regional Executive Director, emphasized the global observance of IDF as a means to highlight the crucial role forests play in human survival. With this year’s theme, “Forest and Food,” the initiative underscored the vital connection between forests and food security, nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods. Beyond being a source of food and raw materials, forests contribute to soil enrichment, water conservation, biodiversity protection, and climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration.
The tree-planting event saw the participation of 429 individuals from various sectors, including the DENR, local government units (LGUs), government agencies, private organizations, people’s organizations, academic institutions, youth groups, and community members. Among the tree species planted were narra, lauan, guyabano, nato, bayok, molave, and bamboo propagules, all selected for their ecological and economic value.
In addition to tree planting, the DENR spearheaded the bagging of 380 seedlings of malabago, bani, and malabitoon, ensuring a continuous supply of native species for future reforestation projects. The event also featured information, education, and communication (IEC) campaigns to further educate participants on the importance of forests in sustaining life and livelihoods.
The Importance of Reforestation
Reforestation is an essential strategy in addressing deforestation and forest degradation. By planting trees, communities can restore degraded ecosystems, improve biodiversity, and enhance climate resilience. Trees act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and mitigating the effects of climate change. Moreover, reforestation helps in preventing soil erosion, conserving water resources, and providing habitat for wildlife.
Protecting Our Remaining Forests
While tree planting initiatives are commendable, forest protection is equally important. Preventing illegal logging, reducing land conversion, and promoting sustainable land use practices are necessary measures to preserve existing forests. Strengthening community involvement, enforcing environmental laws, and promoting responsible ecotourism can also contribute to long-term forest conservation.
A Call to Action
The success of this year’s IDF celebration in Soccsksargen serves as a reminder that collective action is key to environmental sustainability. Individuals, communities, and institutions must continue working together to expand reforestation efforts and safeguard our remaining forests. As stewards of nature, it is our shared responsibility to ensure that future generations can benefit from the rich resources and ecological services that forests provide.
As the world grapples with climate change and environmental degradation, initiatives like this highlight the need for ongoing commitment and participation. Through continued advocacy and action, we can create a greener and more sustainable future for all.
