Rubber farmers in the country are currently experiencing the annual leaf shedding season, commonly known as wintering. This natural phenomenon often leads to a temporary decline in rubber production. To mitigate its effects and maintain the health of rubber trees, experts are providing key recommendations for farmers to follow.
Recommended Actions for Farmers:
- Pause Tapping Temporarily – Once leaf shedding begins, it is advisable to temporarily halt tapping to allow the trees to conserve energy and sprout new leaves.
- Maintain Field Cleanliness – Clearing the surroundings of rubber trees and burning fallen leaves that may be infected with diseases such as Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease can help reduce the spread of infections in the area.
- Apply Fertilizers – Providing adequate nutrients to the trees will help them regain strength and promote healthy leaf growth.
- Use Fungicide When Necessary – As soon as new leaves emerge, particularly when they reach the copper-brown stage, spraying fungicide is recommended to prevent Powdery Mildew, another type of leaf fall disease.
- Engage in Alternative Income Sources – Farmers may consider setting up backyard gardens as a temporary livelihood source, ensuring food supply and additional income during the low-production period.
