MALAPATAN, Sarangani – In a concerted effort to restore and safeguard coastal ecosystems, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Glan, along with key stakeholders, carried out a mangrove planting and coastal cleanup in Barangay Sapu Masla on February 14, 2025.
The initiative resulted in the successful planting of 400 Bungalon (Avicennia marina) propagules, enhancing the barangay’s mangrove cover and reinforcing its natural defenses against coastal erosion. Additionally, participants collected 105 kilograms of marine debris, including plastics, ropes, discarded clothing, tin cans, and plastic and glass bottles with caps, significantly reducing pollution in the area’s coastal environment.
A diverse group of organizations took part in the activity, demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental preservation. Participants included the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Sapu Masla, Sangguniang Kabataan, Principled Achievers Rendering True Services (PARTS), the Purok Jolohano Women’s Association, Bantay Sapa and Gubat, the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Malapatan, the Philippine Coast Guard, the Sarangani Maritime Police Station, the Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
This environmental endeavor is part of the ongoing Recognizing Individuals/Institutions towards Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers (R.I.V.E.Rs) for Life program, which aims to promote sustainable conservation efforts in Barangay Sapu Masla. Through collective action, the program continues to foster community engagement in protecting river, coastal, and marine ecosystems for future generations.
Local authorities emphasized that such activities are crucial in maintaining biodiversity and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. They also encouraged continuous community involvement in similar conservation efforts to sustain the progress made.
The success of the mangrove planting and coastal cleanup highlights the power of collaboration in addressing environmental challenges. With strong community participation, Malapatan is taking significant strides toward a cleaner and greener future.
