Maasim, Sarangani – The Protected Area Management Office – Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (PAMO-SBPS), in collaboration with the Asnalang Fisherfolk Association, conducted a mangrove declogging activity at the mangrove forest and nursery in Barangay Tinoto on January 31.
The initiative successfully removed a total of nine sacks of waste, composed mainly of solid waste materials that had accumulated in the mangrove ecosystem. Among the most common types of trash collected were nylon ropes, diapers, plastic wrappers, and plastic bottles. These pollutants pose a serious threat to the mangroves, as they clog the roots, disrupt habitats for marine species, and hinder proper mangrove growth. Clearing these materials is crucial in ensuring that mangroves continue to provide vital environmental services, including coastal protection and habitat support for marine biodiversity.
The Asnalang Fisherfolk Association’s commitment to environmental stewardship highlights the important role of community organizations in preserving Sarangani Bay’s ecosystems. Their active participation demonstrates how grassroots efforts contribute to the overall protection and sustainability of marine environments.
PAMO-SBPS urges the public to engage in mangrove conservation by practicing responsible waste disposal, reducing plastic consumption, and participating in local cleanup efforts. By supporting environmental education and taking part in community-based conservation initiatives, people can help safeguard the rich biodiversity of Sarangani Bay for future generations.
