Davao City – A suspected carnapping suspect was killed after attempting to grab a police officer’s firearm during transport back to the police station early morning on February 15, 2025, in Binugao, Toril, Davao City.
According to a report from the Toril Police Station, the suspect was identified as Morsid Abdul Motalib, a 28-year-old resident of Cotabato. The incident stemmed from a stolen Bao-Bao tricycle, which was reported missing from a parking area of a major mall in Toril, Davao City. Following the report, police immediately launched a dragnet operation to track down the suspect.
Motalib was apprehended at around 7:30 PM on Valentine’s Day by joint personnel of the Toril Police and Bansalan Municipal Police Station while en route to Cotabato. Authorities confirmed that Motalib and his group had been under surveillance for suspected involvement in multiple vehicle thefts.
During transport back to Davao City, the suspect requested to relieve himself. However, while being granted this request, he allegedly attempted to seize an officer’s firearm and fired a shot. In response, the police shot him in the chest, resulting in his death.
The stolen Bao-Bao tricycle was recovered, and authorities continue to investigate the incident.
Toril Police Chief, Major Sheryl Bautista, emphasized the department’s commitment to monitoring criminal activities.
“The arrest of this carnapping suspect is a manifestation that we have been closely monitoring these personalities for the past weeks and months. While protection of human rights is our primary consideration, we will not allow harm to be brought upon our police officers. When clear and present danger arises, we are bound to protect the lives of our men and prevent any threat to law enforcers,” said Major Bautista.
Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent further crimes.
