Tagum City, Philippines—A year after the tragic shooting that claimed the life of 29-year-old Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Erlinda Maghano, justice is finally within reach. Maghano, a resident of Purok 9, Poblacion, New Corella, Davao del Norte, was gunned down on January 10, 2024, at Freedom Park in this city.
Following a thorough investigation by the Tagum City Investigation and Detection Management Section (CIDMS), authorities apprehended Sherwin Barrot, 32, a resident of Esmiralda Homes, Barangay Apokon, Tagum City. Barrot was arrested through a warrant of arrest issued for his involvement in a murder case in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, under Branch 40 of the Regional Trial Court, 11th Judicial Region. He is listed as the Top 6 Most Wanted Person at the regional level.
The arrest was made possible through advanced forensic technology. A .45 caliber Colt MKIV pistol, with serial number 235048, was recovered and subjected to ballistic examination by the Davao del Norte Provincial Forensic Unit. The results confirmed the firearm’s involvement in ten murder cases across Regions 11 and 13, including the killing of Erlinda Maghano. The gun also came with two magazines and 15 live rounds of ammunition.
Authorities are preparing a murder case against the suspect to bring justice to Maghano and her grieving family. Investigations are also ongoing to identify the mastermind behind the crime.
