North Cotabato, Philippines — Tragedy struck just minutes before the new year as a grenade explosion rocked a local fair in Matalam, North Cotabato, claiming one life and injuring five others.

The blast occurred at approximately 11:50 PM on December 31, 2024, in Sitio Condring, Barangay Marbel, Matalam, according to Vice Mayor Ralph Ryan Rafael. The lone fatality was identified as Romel Presto Cabiso, a local resident and laborer.

Cabiso’s mother, Hilda Presto, described him as a kind-hearted individual who enjoyed motorcycles and gadgets. She shared with Radyo BIDA that Cabiso had just attended a celebration at his employer’s home in Sitio Magoncia, Barangay Kibudoc, and was on his way home. He reportedly stopped briefly at a Wi-Fi vending machine near the fairground before the explosion occurred. Cabiso succumbed to severe injuries sustained in the blast.

Cabiso leaves behind a pregnant wife, compounding the family’s grief after the death of their child due to illness just a year ago.

Five others injured in the attack are currently recovering in the hospital. Authorities have not yet identified the perpetrator or motive behind the grenade attack.

Vice Mayor Rafael condemned the incident in a Facebook post, lamenting how what should have been a joyous celebration turned into a night of tragedy. He personally visited the site of the explosion and assured residents that the local government would assist the victims and ensure a thorough investigation.

“I urge everyone to remain vigilant and prioritize safety, especially during public events,” said Rafael.

Authorities are calling on the public to provide any information that could help in the investigation and to maintain heightened caution in crowded areas to prevent similar incidents.

The incident has cast a shadow over the New Year celebrations in Matalam, leaving the community in mourning as it grapples with this senseless act of violence.
