The Provincial Government of Davao Oriental has intensified measures to strengthen the enforcement of environmental laws and curb illegal activities related to mining and sand and gravel extraction.

From January 15 to 17, 2025, the province conducted its first-ever Province-Wide Deputation Training for personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). This initiative aims to train these officers to assist the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) in apprehending illegal operators in mining and sand and gravel extraction.

Held at the 701st Infantry Brigade in Sitio Magay, Don Martin, Mati City, the training included orientations and lectures on laws and protocols for environmental preservation. Representatives from local government units (LGUs) across Davao Oriental, including police chiefs, military personnel, and officers from 11 towns and cities, participated in the sessions.

Governor Niño Uy Highlights the Role of Law Enforcement

In his address, Governor Niño Uy emphasized the crucial role of the PNP and AFP in not only maintaining peace and order but also protecting the environment.

“As Governor of this province, my position is one of leadership, but I consider myself close to each of you. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our police and military personnel for playing a critical role in safeguarding not only peace and order but also the environment,” Governor Uy stated.

“Our laws are not only meant to protect the environment but also to ensure the well-being of our people and future generations. I hope we fulfill our duties not just because it is mandated by our offices, but out of passion, dedication, and love for our environment and our province,” he added.

A Unified Approach to Environmental Protection

According to ENRO Division Chief Retired Major General Leopoldo Imbang, Jr., the training reflects the collaborative efforts of the Provincial Government, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region XI, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the AFP, and the PNP. This strategy ensures that regulations against illegal mining and extraction activities are enforced effectively by authorized and capable individuals.

As the Co-Chairperson of the Provincial Mining Regulatory Board (PMRB), Governor Uy welcomed this approach, recognizing it as a critical step toward the responsible utilization of the province’s natural resources.

The deputization of personnel to support ENRO demonstrates Davao Oriental’s commitment to protecting the environment and preventing illegal activities that harm both nature and local communities.

This initiative underscores the Provincial Government’s dedication to creating sustainable solutions for the preservation of natural resources, ensuring a healthier environment for current and future generations.
