Davao City experienced a significant boost in tourism in 2024, with over 1.8 million tourists visiting the city, surpassing the 1.2 million arrivals recorded in 2023. This remarkable growth highlights the city’s successful efforts in reviving its tourism sector post-pandemic.
City Tourism Operations Office (CTTO) Head Jennifer Romero attributed the surge in arrivals to the city’s well-organized events and festivities. Speaking at the I-Speak media forum on Thursday, Romero highlighted key events such as Araw ng Dabaw, Duaw Dabaw, the Kadayawan Festival, and Pasko Fiesta as major attractions.
“We are confident about reaching 2.5 million visitors this year,” Romero said. “We have stabilized the events in our city. As early as now, we are already planning what to do. We will release dates so tourists can book flights ahead of time,” she added.
Accurate Visitor Data
The 2024 tourist arrival data was compiled based on visitors staying in accredited accommodations. Romero clarified that tourists staying with family, friends, or in unaccredited establishments were not included in the tally.
“So katong niadto diri nga turista, nga natulog sailahang paryente, nakitulog sa bisan asa, or much more natulog sa dili accredited nga establishments, dili gyud na siya counted (Tourists who stayed with relatives, anywhere, or even in unaccredited places were not counted),” she explained.
Record-Breaking Festivals
The Kadayawan Festival in August drew the highest number of visitors, totaling 190,068. December also saw a large influx, with 178,555 tourists enjoying the city’s Pasko Fiesta celebrations.
Romero emphasized the importance of supporting the city’s events, particularly the Kadayawan Festival, which continues to be a premier attraction for both local and international visitors.
Enhancing MICE Tourism
To attract more meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE), the CTTO is collaborating with private sectors and stakeholders to develop MICE incentives.
“We usually give incentives like welcome dancers and performers at the airport during group arrivals. We also have staff at reception desks to assist groups,” Romero said.
This initiative is expected to draw more conventions and business-related activities to Davao City, further boosting its tourism sector.
Strategic Tourism Plans
The Department of Tourism in the Davao Region is developing a Regional Tourism Development Plan to encourage sustainable growth. Romero added that the Davao City Local Tourism Development Plan will also be updated to incorporate innovative strategies and promote emerging destinations.
“Daghan naman pod og destinations si Davao City nga kailangan na pod nato siya ma promote (Davao City has many destinations that need promotion),” she said.
Expanding Air Connectivity
To facilitate easier access to Davao City, the air connectivity council has been actively working to attract airline companies to increase flights. New direct routes from Davao to Siargao, Caticlan, Clark, Pampanga, and Puerto Princesa, Palawan, have recently been established. Efforts are also underway to secure more international flights.
Encouraging Local Support
Romero urged Dabawenyos to support the city’s events and take pride in its growing reputation as a top destination. With a vibrant lineup of festivals, improved connectivity, and strategic planning, Davao City is poised to achieve its ambitious target of 2.5 million tourist arrivals in 2024.
