In a testament to the collaborative efforts of environmental advocates and concerned citizens, two significant wildlife rescue and release operations were recently conducted in Zamboanga del Norte, ensuring the safe return of an endemic Philippine Serpent Eagle (Spilornis holospilus) and a Philippine Sailfin Lizard (Hydrosaurus pustulatus) to their natural habitats.

Philippine Serpent Eagle Release in Dipolog City

On December 6, 2024, a Philippine Serpent Eagle was successfully released at the Cogon Eco-Tourism Park in Dipolog City. The release was spearheaded by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Zamboanga del Norte, with key personnel including Supervising Environmental Management Specialist Renerio M. Acama, Forester III Maribel G. Acama, Environmental Management Specialist I Irish A. Nogot, and Technical Staff Mary Emma T. Mallari.

The eagle was initially spotted at a warehouse in Minaog, Dipolog City, by an attentive employee who immediately surrendered the bird to PENRO Zamboanga del Norte on December 5. Following its turnover, the eagle underwent a comprehensive health check at the City Veterinarian Office in Dipolog, where it was deemed fit for release. With the support of the Cogon Eco-Tourism Park staff, DENR personnel facilitated the eagle’s return to the wild.

PENRO Zamboanga del Norte extended its gratitude to the vigilant citizen who took responsible action and to the professionals who ensured the eagle’s safe return. The successful operation underscores the importance of wildlife conservation in maintaining ecological balance and raising public awareness about the need to protect the region’s biodiversity.

Philippine Sailfin Lizard Rescue and Release

In a separate operation, a Philippine Sailfin Lizard was rescued and released through the joint efforts of PENRO Zamboanga del Norte, CENRO Manukan, the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Olingan, and other stakeholders.

On December 3, a Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) personnel reported the presence of the lizard at Boulevard, Miputak, Dipolog City, to PENRO Zamboanga del Norte. Acting promptly, PENRO personnel retrieved the lizard, which was turned over by a local resident, Mr. Alrie Sumalpong. After being transported to the PENRO office, the lizard underwent an assessment, showing no signs of injury and displaying active behavior.

The lizard was subsequently released into a mangrove area in Olingan, Dipolog City, on December 4. Prior to the release, an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) session was conducted to emphasize the ecological significance of the Philippine Sailfin Lizard and the necessity of preserving its habitat. The release was led by Forest Technician I Allen Empeynado, a trained wildlife handler from CENRO Manukan, with the participation of PAMBCU personnel, regional and PENRO information officers, CENRO Manukan CDS Chief SEMS Adrian A. Galan, and local stakeholders.

PENRO Zamboanga del Norte expressed its appreciation to Mr. Sumalpong and the community for their vigilance and cooperation. The office reiterated its commitment to protecting the province’s rich biodiversity and ensuring the survival of its unique wildlife species.

Promoting Conservation and Ecological Awareness

These successful rescue and release operations highlight the dedication of local environmental agencies, stakeholders, and citizens to preserving wildlife and their habitats. The conservation of endemic species such as the Philippine Serpent Eagle and the Philippine Sailfin Lizard is vital to sustaining the ecological balance and biodiversity of the region. PENRO Zamboanga del Norte continues to lead efforts in fostering environmental stewardship and raising awareness about the critical importance of wildlife conservation.
