Families displaced by the February 6, 2024, Masara landslide in Barangay Elizalde, Maco, Davao de Oro, have taken a significant step toward rebuilding their lives. On December 8, a turnover ceremony was held at the Sitio Patagan Resettlement Site, officially transferring permanent housing units to these beneficiaries, who previously resided in temporary shelters at Kampo 1.
The event marked a milestone in the journey of recovery for the affected families. Their new homes symbolize hope and stability, providing them with a fresh start after the tragedy.
The housing project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the provincial, municipal, and barangay local government units (LGUs), along with national government agencies. Key figures who spearheaded the turnover included Davao de Oro Governor Dorothy “Dotdot” M. Gonzaga, Congressman Ruwel Peter Gonzaga of the Second District, and Maco Mayor Arthur Carlos Voltaire R. Rimando. Representatives from the Philippine Army, Philippine National Police, and private sector stakeholders also graced the ceremony.
A Testament to Unity and Resilience
Governor Gonzaga emphasized the importance of housing in the beneficiaries’ journey to recovery.
“A home holds great significance, and I am overjoyed by the support shown to the government. This is a testament to what we can achieve together,” she said, expressing gratitude to all agencies involved.
Congressman Ruwel Peter Gonzaga also shared his pride in contributing to the project.
“I am happy to be part of this government initiative, to work with private stakeholders and employees who helped build these homes. You, the beneficiaries, are the inspiration for these efforts,” he remarked.
The construction of the housing units showcased the invaluable contributions of both public and private entities, which provided funding, labor, construction materials, and other forms of support.

The resettlement program in Barangay Elizalde is part of the government’s phased recovery plan for Maco, Davao de Oro.
