The Davao City Business Bureau has reported a notable increase in the number of restaurant businesses registering their establishments this year, reflecting a vibrant post-pandemic recovery for the industry.

Maribel Paguican, head of the Business Bureau, disclosed in an interview on Wednesday that 1,241 restaurant businesses applied for permits in 2024. This marks a significant rise compared to the 1,176 applicants recorded in 2023. Of the total applicants this year, 1,083 establishments have already been issued permits, while 158 are in the process of completing the remaining requirements.

“After the pandemic, it’s very good to note that the [restaurant business] sector is still alive and kicking. There’s vibrancy in their operation since the data will speak for itself,” Paguican said.

Pandemic Decline and Gradual Recovery

Paguican also highlighted the stark contrast in the restaurant sector’s performance during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, only 1,013 restaurant businesses applied for permits, and this number further dropped to 891 in 2021, an almost 11 percent decrease attributed to strict health protocols and lockdowns.

The situation began to improve in 2022, with the bureau recording a 20 percent increase in applications, reaching 1,070.

Current Trends and Challenges

While the growth in restaurant registrations indicates a robust recovery, Paguican noted that the industry still faces challenges. The rise of pop-up food stalls, mobile food vendors, and night markets has introduced more competition. Additionally, evolving marketing strategies significantly influence the operations of traditional restaurant businesses.

To address these challenges, the Business Bureau is actively coordinating with regulatory agencies and the Davao City Tourism Operations Office. Their collaboration includes revisiting and potentially revising tourism accreditation fees to better support the restaurant sector.

A Positive Outlook

Paguican’s observations underscore the resilience of the restaurant industry in Davao City. The increase in registrations demonstrates not only the sector’s recovery but also its adaptability to new market dynamics and consumer preferences.

As the Business Bureau continues to streamline processes and address industry concerns, the restaurant business community in Davao City is poised for sustained growth in the coming years.
