The Forest Management Services (FMS) of the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM-MENRE) and the Kutawato Greenland Initiatives, Inc. (KGI) successfully concluded the Bangsamoro Forest Land Use Plan (BFLUP) Review and Refinement Workshop in Davao City on December 14-15, 2024. This crucial event gathered key stakeholders, including representatives from local government units (LGUs) of Maluso, Basilan; Upi, Maguindanao; and Pualas, Lanao del Sur.
The two-day workshop aimed to refine BFLUP strategies and align policies with climate change adaptation measures. Participants actively engaged in discussions and activities to ensure the finalized plans effectively address the unique needs of their respective communities. The overarching goal was to contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future for the Bangsamoro region.
FMS Director Abdul-Jalil S. Umngan, in his opening remarks, highlighted the vital role of moral governance in securing the well-being of the Bangsamoro people. “Moral governance goes beyond good governance,” he emphasized, “as it encompasses principles of participatory decision-making, accountability, and responsibility towards our constituents.” He acknowledged the historical struggle for basic rights in the region and underscored the significance of a sustainable future for its people. Director Umngan further stressed that the BFLUPs are not merely technical documents but a reflection of the collective commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring the well-being of the Bangsamoro communities.
Key representatives and technical personnel from MENRE-BARMM, including members of the FMS Land Evaluation Mapping Section and PENRE and CENRE officers from Basilan, Sulu, Maguindanao, and Lanao del Sur, were present at the workshop. Their participation underscored MENRE-BARMM’s strong commitment to collaborative efforts in forest management planning.
The workshop’s agenda included revisiting existing forest land use plans, identifying gaps, and ensuring that these plans are adaptable to evolving climate challenges. Stakeholders worked collectively to refine strategies that balance environmental conservation with socio-economic development.
The conclusion of the BFLUP Review and Refinement Workshop represents a significant milestone in advancing sustainable development in the Bangsamoro region. By strengthening BFLUPs, MENRE-BARMM and LGU participants aim to protect vital ecosystems and natural resources while fostering a brighter future for the Bangsamoro people. The collaborative efforts during the workshop serve as a testament to the shared commitment to environmental stewardship and community empowerment.
