COTABATO CITY – The annual Shariff Kabunsuan Festival became a vibrant platform for local innovation and commerce as the Bangsamoro region hosted the Agri-Trade Fair 2024 from December 16 to 19 at the Bangsamoro Government Center. The event, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR) through its MAFAR Local Exchange and Network of Goods in any Kind of Emergency (MAFARLENGKE) program, reflected a strong collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Investments and Tourism (MTIT), Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), and the Cooperative and Social Enterprise Authority (CSEA) under the Office of the Chief Minister.

A total of 20 Bangsamoro farmers and fisherfolk cooperatives and associations participated, showcasing products that celebrate the region’s culture and rich natural resources. Featured items included fresh agricultural produce, artisanal crafts, local delicacies, and other goods that highlight the unique heritage of their communities.

The event was a resounding success, with Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) supported by MAFAR collectively achieving sales amounting to P335,663.00. This milestone underscores the potential of local industries to thrive and contribute significantly to the region’s economic development.

Promoting Healthy and Affordable Products

The Agri-Trade Fair also served as a platform to connect farmers with their communities, ensuring access to healthy and reasonably priced agricultural and fishery products. Farmers were encouraged to directly market their goods, fostering sustainable practices and strengthening ties between producers and consumers.

According to MAFAR Minister Mohammad S. Yacob, the initiative aligns with the ministry’s overarching goal of enhancing collaboration among Bangsamoro ministries and agencies to deliver comprehensive services. The MAFARLENGKE program aims to support agribusiness development, promote local industries, and provide essential market information to stakeholders.

A Collaborative Effort

The fair’s ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 16 was attended by key officials, including Bangsamoro Director General for Fisheries Services Pendatun S. Patarasa, MPA, and Director II Julie O. Maliga, RN, MPASR of the Administrative and Finance Management Services. Their presence reinforced the region’s commitment to fostering enterprise development and empowering local communities.

A Celebration of Culture and Progress

Through initiatives like the Agri-Trade Fair, the Bangsamoro region continues to showcase its vibrant culture and economic potential. By providing platforms for cooperatives and MSMEs to shine, the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival strengthens the foundation for a thriving and self-reliant Bangsamoro economy.
