Monkayo, Davao de Oro — On December 16, 2024, at approximately 5:50 PM, Hon. Edgar Sismar, Barangay Kagawad of Barangay Union, reported the discovery of abandoned Falcata logs in Purok Gemilina, Barangay Union, Monkayo. The swift response by local authorities highlighted their commitment to protecting natural resources.

Personnel from the Davao de Oro Police, in coordination with Hon. Sismar and Mr. Dennis E. Ras, Forest Technician I, conducted an immediate inspection of the site. The operation resulted in the recovery of 35 pieces of dried Falcata logs, which had been left abandoned. These logs were measured to have a total volume of 63 board feet, with an estimated market value of Php 4,500.00.

The recovered logs are currently in the custody of the Davao de Oro Police. Authorities are conducting further investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding their abandonment and to identify any individuals responsible for potential violations of forestry laws.

“The proper disposition of these logs will follow the guidelines set forth by applicable forestry laws and regulations to ensure accountability and environmental protection,” a police representative stated.

This incident underscores the importance of vigilance among local officials and communities in preserving forest resources. The involvement of Barangay officials and forestry technicians in such operations demonstrates the collaborative effort needed to address illegal logging activities and their environmental impact.
