Manila, Philippines — The World Bank has reiterated its commitment to supporting the Philippines in achieving long-lasting peace and development, particularly in conflict-affected areas. This reassurance came during a courtesy call on Thursday by Zager Mustafaoglu, the World Bank’s Country Director for the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei, with Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito G. Galvez, Jr.

The meeting, held at the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU), focused on strengthening ongoing collaborations under the Philippine government’s Comprehensive Peace Process. Mustafaoglu was joined by Mary Morrison, Senior Social Development Specialist, and Clarissa Crisostomo David, Senior Country Officer of the World Bank.

Focus on Comprehensive Peace Programs
Discussions centered on key initiatives that address the root causes of conflict, foster inclusive development, and support vulnerable communities in Mindanao and other regions. Mustafaoglu praised the government’s efforts and highlighted the importance of sustained partnerships.

“The World Bank is committed to working with the Philippines to ensure that peace translates into tangible development for communities most in need,” said Mustafaoglu. “We see the peace process as critical not only for stability but also for economic growth and social progress.”

A Trusted Development Partner
The World Bank has been a long-standing ally of the Philippines in advancing its peace agenda, particularly through programs targeting conflict transformation, post-conflict rehabilitation, and capacity-building initiatives. Past collaborations include funding for livelihood programs, infrastructure development, and support for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Presidential Peace Adviser Galvez expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s unwavering support. “Their assistance has been instrumental in implementing peacebuilding efforts and empowering communities. We are optimistic that our partnership will continue to yield positive results,” he said.

Looking Ahead
As part of its ongoing commitment, the World Bank plans to enhance technical and financial support for critical projects under the peace process. These include initiatives that promote education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods in previously underserved areas.

The meeting underscores the shared vision of the Philippine government and the World Bank to create a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient society. Stakeholders hope these collaborative efforts will serve as a model for other nations grappling with conflict and inequality.

The continued dialogue between global institutions like the World Bank and the Philippine government is a testament to the power of partnership in achieving peace and development goals.
