UPLB Perspective Marks 15th Anniversary of Ampatuan Massacre with Call to Defend Press Freedom

The University of the Philippines Los Baños’ (UPLB) official student publication, UPLB Perspective, is set to lead a series of events commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Ampatuan, Maguindanao Massacre under the theme “Ilathala ang Hustisya: Pagkalas Mula sa Kultura ng Panunupil at Impunidad” (Publish Justice: Breaking Free from the Culture of Suppression and Impunity).

The Ampatuan Massacre, which took place on November 23, 2009, claimed the lives of 58 individuals, including 32 journalists, marking it as one of the darkest days for press freedom in the Philippines. The incident, labeled by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) as the “single deadliest event” for journalists since 1992, continues to serve as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by media practitioners in the country.

A Call for Justice and Accountability

For this year’s commemoration, UPLB Perspective has lined up activities aimed at raising awareness about media safety and continuing the call for justice for the victims of the massacre. The events are also a platform to shed light on the persisting culture of impunity and state suppression against press freedom.

  • November 18:
An Educational Discussion Series will be held at the Physical Sciences Lecture Hall B from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Experts and advocates will delve into the pressing issues of media safety and the ongoing threats faced by journalists.
  • November 22:
A Film Showing at the Physical Sciences Lecture Hall B from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM will present key news reports and narratives about the massacre. This will be followed by a Black Friday Protest at Oblation Park at 7:00 PM, serving as a powerful collective action to condemn the injustices and impunity that continue to plague the country.

A Continuing Struggle for Press Freedom

Through these initiatives, UPLB Perspective affirms its commitment to amplifying the call for justice for the victims of the Ampatuan Massacre. The publication, alongside allied organizations, emphasizes the critical role of a free press in holding power to account and ensuring that such a tragedy is never repeated.

In a society still grappling with threats to free expression, the commemoration highlights the urgency of collective resistance against oppressive systems that seek to silence dissent.

“Let us stand together to publish and fight against the injustice and culture of impunity fostered by a repressive state,” the organizers urge.

Beyond Remembering

As the nation marks 15 years since the massacre, these events serve not only as a tribute to the victims but also as a rallying cry to uphold the values of press freedom, truth, and accountability. The fight for the “Fight for 58” is far from over, and the UPLB community continues to stand as a bastion for justice and human rights.
