KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines — November 9, 2024
To preserve the ecological integrity of Mt. Apo Natural Park (MANP), a strict protected area spanning Regions XI and XII, the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) continues to implement rigorous monitoring and conservation efforts. MANP’s importance as a natural haven has prompted regular assessments to balance tourism and preservation effectively.

In line with this goal, MANP’s Sub-PAMB conducted its 4th Quarter regular meeting on November 8, 2024, at Boylyn’s Pensione Plaza in Kidapawan City. During the session, members discussed the park’s “effective carrying capacity,” a measure to determine the maximum number of visitors and activities the park can sustain without compromising its natural resources. This assessment forms a critical part of sustainable tourism planning in MANP, ensuring that ecological balance is maintained while accommodating visitors responsibly.
Central to PAMB’s conservation strategy is enforcing environmental laws within MANP, with particular focus on preventing illegal activities. The board also oversees the issuance of PAMB clearances, required for any projects or establishments within the park’s jurisdiction, to ensure compliance with sustainability standards.
The meeting further addressed penalties for environmental violations, stressing that violators will face fines following thorough investigations. In addition, trekking activities within the park’s Strict Protection Zones (SPZ) have been temporarily suspended. Only scientific research and ceremonial or religious activities conducted by Indigenous Peoples (IPs) are permitted within these zones, reflecting PAMB’s commitment to respecting IP rights and cultural heritage.
Atty. Felix S. Alicer, DENR Regional Executive Director and Chairperson of the MANP Cotabato Sub-PAMB, led the meeting. Other attendees included representatives from the Provincial Legal Office and the Provincial Governor’s Office, including Atty. William Uy and Executive Assistant Jessie Enid Jr., on behalf of Governor Lala Taliño-Mendoza.
Governor Mendoza has voiced strong support for initiatives that uphold environmental protection, underscoring the importance of conserving protected areas to safeguard the region’s natural beauty and prevent ecological disasters. Her commitment reflects a broader aim to ensure that future generations inherit a well-preserved Mt. Apo.
Through ongoing dialogue and strict conservation policies, MANP aims to serve as a model of sustainable management, balancing public access and preservation for one of the Philippines’ most cherished natural parks.
