Historic Peace Agreement Settles Long-Standing “Rido” Between Prominent Families in Lanao del Sur

Marawi City, Philippines – On November 3, 2024, a long-standing family feud, locally known as a “rido,” between the Ambol family of Roroga Agus, Marawi City, and the Balt family of Bayang municipality, both from Lanao del Sur province, was officially settled in a significant peace agreement ceremony held at the Capitol Gymnasium, New Capitol Complex, Marawi City.

The ceremony was attended by PCOL Robert S. Daculan, Provincial Director of the Lanao del Sur Provincial Police Office (PPO), and PCPT Esnairah M. Lucman, Admin PCO from the Marawi City Police Station. Their presence underscored the commitment of the police force in supporting peace-building efforts in the region. The initiative, orchestrated by the Provincial Local Government Unit, was led by Provincial Governor Dr. Mamintal A. Adiong, Jr., and Vice Governor Mohammad Khalid “Mujam” Raki-in Adiong. Local government officials collaborated with community, religious, and military leaders to facilitate this resolution, drawing support from a broad coalition aimed at fostering stability in Lanao del Sur.

The centuries-old custom of “rido” represents a cycle of revenge and retaliation that can span generations, often disrupting peace and security in affected communities. The conflict between the Ambol and Balt families had been marked by a series of clashes and misunderstandings that sowed discord not only within their communities but also among other affected residents in nearby areas. This feud is emblematic of the complexities faced in parts of Mindanao, where cultural and familial loyalties often intersect with disputes, creating tensions that can be difficult to resolve without third-party intervention.

Witnessing the historic settlement were key figures, including Bayang Mayor Aslani Balt; Board Members Hon. Jalal “Bubuly” Decampong and Hon. Ringo Usman Gandamra; former Second District Representative Jun Papandayan; Chief of the Provincial Security Force (PSF), Taib A. Adiong; Sultan Mala Camal Macalanggan; and BGEN Yegor P. Baroquillo Jr., Commander of the 103rd Infantry (Haribon) Brigade. This collective representation highlighted the importance of a united front in resolving local conflicts.

Through a process of negotiation and open dialogue, the Ambol and Balt families were able to arrive at a peaceful resolution. Facilitators ensured that both parties had opportunities to voice their grievances and aspirations for the future. By the end of the discussions, both families agreed to sign a formal peace agreement, symbolizing their commitment to reconciliation and marking a new chapter in their relationship.

Governor Adiong, addressing the assembly, remarked on the significance of the moment: “This peace agreement is not only a victory for the Ambol and Balt families but a testament to the power of unity in our province. It’s a reminder that by coming together, we can end the cycles of violence that have hindered our growth for far too long.”

This landmark settlement marks another successful intervention in a series of efforts led by the Provincial Local Government Unit to address rido cases in Lanao del Sur. With ongoing support from the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and local stakeholders, Lanao del Sur aims to promote lasting peace across communities, ensuring that future generations can live without the fear of renewed family feuds.
