Bongao, Tawi-Tawi — On November 2, 2024, at approximately 10:20 a.m., high-ranking officials, led by retired Police Lieutenant General (PLTGEN) Rhodel O. Sermonia and Lieutenant General William Gonzales, Commander of the Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom), along with Mr. Albert Martinez and the UNTV/Wonderful Pinas Production Team, arrived at Sanga-Sanga Airport in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi. They were warmly welcomed by personnel from the Tawi-Tawi Provincial Police Office (TTPPO), led by Provincial Director PCOL Rodolfo A. Inoy HR.
The visit aimed to highlight Tawi-Tawi’s tourism potential for the Wonderful Pinas TV Program on UNTV, which has a dedicated tourism segment. The show, focused on Philippine travel destinations, seeks to broaden public awareness of Tawi-Tawi’s rich history, cultural heritage, and natural beauty.
The tour started with a courtesy call and interview with Governor Yshmael “Mang” I. Sali, who shared the local government’s vision for sustainable tourism that respects the island’s ecology and cultural heritage. The segment underscored Tawi-Tawi’s unique tourism appeal, which blends rich history with pristine landscapes.
Among the notable locations visited by the team were the Sheik Karimul Makhdum Mosque, the oldest mosque in the Philippines, located on Simunul Island. This landmark is a significant symbol of the country’s Islamic heritage, dating back to the arrival of Arab missionary Sheik Karimul Makhdum in the 14th century. The delegation also explored the serene Sangay Siapuh Island, a less-trodden paradise within the municipality of Simunul, known for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life.
In addition to promoting tourism, the visit also involved discussions on peace and security, which are essential for Tawi-Tawi’s tourism growth. The Provincial Director provided insights into ongoing security initiatives that help foster a safe environment for tourists and residents alike. The team also held an information drive for security frontliners during the observance of Undas 2024, underscoring the collaborative efforts between the tourism and security sectors.
The visit is anticipated to boost Tawi-Tawi’s visibility as a travel destination, aligning with the province’s goals to promote local tourism while ensuring the safety and well-being of its visitors. As the Wonderful Pinas program broadcasts Tawi-Tawi’s allure to a national audience, local officials hope the coverage will attract tourists and encourage them to experience the beauty and history of Tawi-Tawi firsthand.
