Davao del Sur, Philippines – Rev. Fr. Ansel Apatan of the Diocese of Surigao fulfilled a lifelong dream on September 22, 2024, by celebrating a special mass at the summit of Mt. Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, standing at 2,954 meters above sea level.
Fr. Apatan, an avid hiker, was accompanied by a group of 15 climbers from Surigao in the journey to the summit. The group embarked on the challenging trek, which culminated in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the top of the mountain.
The mass at the summit was a deeply spiritual experience, blending faith and nature as Fr. Apatan led prayers in gratitude for the beauty of creation. “It has always been my dream to celebrate mass at the highest point in our country,” Fr. Apatan shared after the mass. “I offer this for the safety of all mountaineers and for the preservation of our natural environment.”
