The Police Regional Office 9 (PRO 9), led by Regional Director PBGen Bowenn Joey M. Masauding, has raised the security status of the Zamboanga Peninsula to Heightened Alert in preparation for the filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COC) for the upcoming elections, which began on October 1, 2024. The alert level was also increased due to the ongoing Zamboanga Hermosa Festival, a major cultural celebration in the region.
This move underscores PRO 9’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security during this critical period. Enhanced security protocols are being implemented across the region, with police visibility significantly boosted in high-risk areas such as tourist destinations, public spaces, and other densely populated areas. Random checkpoints, foot, mobile, and beat patrols have been intensified, particularly in crime-prone zones, to deter potential threats and ensure quick responses to any security incidents.
PBGen Masauding, in a stern address to law enforcement officers, emphasized the need for vigilance and readiness. “We are not leaving anything to chance. Every officer must be fully prepared, and the public must remain vigilant. As we celebrate the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival and enter this crucial phase in our democratic process, we will not tolerate any disruptions, disturbances, or threats. Maintaining peace and order is non-negotiable,” he declared. He further warned that any attempt to undermine the region’s safety or interfere with the integrity of the elections will be met with the full force of the law.
In addition to bolstering security measures, PBGen Masauding called on the public to be proactive partners in ensuring community safety. He urged citizens to immediately report any suspicious activities to the authorities, stressing that community involvement is vital to the success of the heightened alert status.
