October 23, 2024 — A new ferry service aimed at enhancing the speed and convenience of sea travel between Zamboanga and Basilan was officially launched on Wednesday morning. Fast Cat, the Philippines’ first and only catamaran roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry, inaugurated its Zamboanga-Basilan route at the local port with a ceremonial blessing of the Fast Cat M11, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and its inaugural voyage to Basilan.
The Fast Cat M11 is set to operate three daily trips, boasting a maximum speed of 19 knots. This state-of-the-art vessel can accommodate up to 300 passengers, 40 vehicles, and approximately seven trucks and buses, making it a significant addition to the region’s transportation options.
Travel time from Zamboanga to Basilan is approximately one hour and 30 minutes. The schedule includes departures from Zamboanga City at 6:00 AM, 10:30 AM, and 3:30 PM, with return trips from Basilan at 8:30 AM, 1:00 PM, and 5:30 PM. Ticket prices are competitively set at P240 for economy class, P252 for premium economy, and P280 for business class. To celebrate the launch, Fast Cat is offering a 50% discount on fares for both passengers and rolling cargoes from October 23 to 25.
The opening ceremony and maiden voyage were attended by top executives from Fast Cat, along with officials from the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Ports Authority, and other relevant agencies. This new service is expected to significantly improve connectivity and promote trade between Zamboanga and Basilan, benefiting both locals and businesses in the region.
