October 5, 2024 — In a significant milestone for the island of South Ubian, the long-awaited inauguration and energization of the Tabawan Diesel Plant and distribution line has taken place, symbolizing a brighter and more prosperous future for the local community. The ceremony was led by the Honorable Mayor Hadzri H. Matba, alongside key local leaders, including Tawi-Tawi Provincial Governor Honorable Ishmael “Mang” Sali, and other government and NPC officials.
This event marks a pivotal moment for the island, as access to reliable electricity has been a long-standing need. For years, the residents of South Ubian have contended with inconsistent power supply, limiting opportunities for economic growth, education, and healthcare. The inauguration of the Tabawan Diesel Plant changes that, providing a consistent and dependable energy source.
The availability of power brings wide-ranging benefits for the island, transforming everyday life. Local businesses will be able to operate efficiently, students will have reliable access to electricity for their studies, and healthcare services will be better equipped to meet the needs of the population. The residents, who have long hoped for improvements, now see the power project as a catalyst for change that will drive economic development across Ubian and surrounding areas.
In his speech, Mayor Matba emphasized the significance of this project for the island, underlining how it will elevate the community and pave the way for long-term growth. Governor Sali further highlighted the importance of the project in supporting his administration’s vision of energizing the entire province of Tawi-Tawi. The completion of the Tabawan Diesel Plant is seen as a strategic step towards attracting investment, improving infrastructure, and creating more opportunities for local industries.
Initially, four barangays—Pampang, Bengkol, Tang-ngah, and Lambi-Lambian—will benefit from this energization, with plans to extend the coverage to all barangays by 2028. This expansion will ensure that every household on the island has access to electricity, transforming the everyday lives of the residents by providing essential services and opportunities.
As the island of Ubian moves forward, the newly established power infrastructure will help close the gap between the island and more developed areas, putting South Ubian on the path toward greater prosperity and self-reliance. This project represents not only the promise of economic upliftment but also the strengthening of community resilience.
The inauguration was attended by a wide range of stakeholders, including local barangay leaders and the Sarajan family, who generously donated land for the project. Their presence symbolized the united efforts of the local government and community to make this long-cherished dream a reality.
