Community Unites to Surrender Illegal Firearms in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur

Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur – In a significant step towards ensuring peace and safety in the region, the 6th Infantry (Redskin) Battalion, led by LTC Al Victor C. Burkley, presented 39 high-caliber unregistered firearms voluntarily surrendered by concerned citizens. This event took place on October 22, 2024, in front of COL Ricky P. Bunayog, Deputy Brigade Commander of the 601st Infantry (Unifier) Brigade, along with other dignitaries.

The firearms surrender, which occurred between September 6 and October 22, 2024, is part of an ongoing campaign against illegal firearms as the community prepares for the upcoming 2025 Midterm Elections. The initiative reflects the collaborative efforts of local government officials, including barangay leaders, and the community’s desire for a peaceful living environment.

In addition to the firearms, the event included the presentation of a surrenderee named Joher and the recovery of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other military materials during recent decisive military operations.

During the program, victims and survivors of gun violence shared their heart-wrenching stories. Sapaila Dalandas Uttok, a widow, expressed her pain: “It is very hard to lose a loved one, especially when the head of the family is gone. I have lost a partner in life and in raising our children.”

COL Ricky P. Bunayog emphasized the importance of peace in fostering a tranquil and progressive community. He commended the civilians who voluntarily surrendered their weapons and encouraged others to support government initiatives aimed at enhancing safety.

The event was attended by several key officials, including Hon. Victor T. Samama Al Hadjj, Mayor of Datu Piang; Hon. Omar K. Ali, Acting Mayor of Datu Salibo; Mr. Omar Sissay, Executive Secretary of Shariff Saydona Mustapha; Mr. Roger Gornes, Secretary to the Mayor of Mamasapano; barangay leaders, and other guests, all united in their commitment to a safer community.

As the region moves forward, the joint efforts of the military, local government, and community members signal a hopeful path towards lasting peace and security in Maguindanao del Sur.
