AdZU Donates Over 1,000 Books to Remote Schools in Basilan, Empowering Young Learners

October 17, 2024 – Zamboanga City, Philippines
Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) has made a significant contribution to education in Basilan Province, donating over 1,000 books to schools in remote areas. The initiative, organized by the University’s Purchasing and Custodial Office (PCO), aims to enrich the learning environment for students who have limited access to educational resources.

The donation was made as part of a broader project to support underprivileged schools in the far-flung islands of Basilan. The initiative is the brainchild of Ms. Jhulie Rose E. Villarin, LPT, of AdZU’s University Communications Office, who partnered with the 15th Special Forces Company in support of their “Pahina” advocacy. “Pahina” focuses on rehabilitating school facilities, specifically converting a schoolroom into a library to foster a love for learning among students.

On behalf of the PCO Director, Ms. Christine I. Calunod, the PCO team officially turned over the books to Captain Dann Mar D. Palma, Commanding Officer of the 15th Special Forces Company. The partnership between AdZU and the Special Forces highlights the collaborative spirit needed to reach students in some of the most isolated areas in the region.

“This collaboration ensures that young learners, no matter how remote their location, have access to essential educational materials. It’s our shared belief that education is key to empowering communities, and we are committed to supporting projects that bring knowledge to students in need,” said Ms. Villarin.

The donated books cover a wide range of subjects, from basic reading materials to more advanced academic resources, giving students the opportunity to enhance their literacy and broaden their understanding of various topics. For many students in Basilan’s isolated schools, this donation will provide them with their first experience of having access to a fully functioning library.

AdZU’s commitment to education extends far beyond its own campus, with projects like this exemplifying its mission to foster hope and resilience in the hearts of students. “Our goal is to create lasting impacts through education, especially in communities that need it most,” said Ms. Calunod.

This book donation is just one of many initiatives that demonstrate AdZU’s dedication to serving not only its immediate community but also the greater region. The university has consistently worked to ensure that their programs and projects leave a meaningful legacy, transforming lives through education.

The impact of this initiative will be felt for years to come, as the new libraries will serve as hubs for learning and creativity for the youth in Basilan. By providing access to books, AdZU is contributing to the intellectual growth and future success of young learners in the region, embodying the university’s vision of action with a purpose.
