Davao City, Philippines – On Friday, October 18, 2024, around 100 Indigenous Peoples (IP) youth gathered at the Almacen Training Center in Brgy. Catalunan Pequeño, Davao City. The event marked the launch of the 8th edition of the Davao City IP Youth Artists’ Assembly, coinciding with the 27th celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Month.
Led by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) Region XI, NCIP Davao City Provincial Office, and the Davao City IP Youth Federation, the assembly aimed to preserve the culture of indigenous communities amid the challenges of modernization. The gathering showcased a rich display of traditional attire, accessories, and products made by various IP communities, including the Ata, Bagobo Tagabawa, Bagobo Klata, Matigsalug, and Obu Manuvu.
This year’s theme, “Forging Partnership for Rights-Based Development of Indigenous Peoples,” highlighted the collective effort to safeguard the rights and traditions of the IP communities while fostering sustainable development.
Throughout the event, the IP youth proudly exhibited their talents, culture, and identity through performances and exhibitions. The vibrant display of traditional crafts and products, representing the unique heritage of each community, aimed to raise awareness and appreciation for indigenous craftsmanship and creativity.
The assembly’s activities aligned with the theme “Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-Determination and Future-Readiness,” emphasizing the critical role of the youth in shaping the future of their communities. Through art and cultural expression, the young indigenous participants reinforced their commitment to preserving their heritage and standing as advocates for their rights.
The Davao City IP Youth Artists’ Assembly continues to serve as a vital platform for empowering the indigenous youth to lead, innovate, and inspire others while safeguarding the traditions passed down through generations.
