Gov. Abdusakur Tan Welcomes Supreme Court Decision on Sulu’s Exclusion from BARMM

Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan has expressed his delight over the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the petition filed by the Provincial Government of Sulu, which sought to exclude the province from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). This statement was shared during an interview with Radyo Pilipinas Jolo.

Governor Tan acknowledged that several years had passed since the petition was filed, and he had not expected a positive outcome. This uncertainty led him to respond to the call of fellow governors and allies in the BARMM Grand Coalition, who endorsed him for the position of chief minister in BARMM.

The governor emphasized that the will of the people of Sulu, as expressed in the 2019 plebiscite, was of utmost importance to him. During the plebiscite, the majority of Sulu’s residents voted against inclusion in BARMM.

Governor Tan’s reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision underscores his commitment to respecting the wishes of his constituents and ensuring that their voices are heard in the governance of their province. This development marks a significant moment for Sulu as it navigates its future outside the BARMM framework.
