Piagapo, Lanao del Sur—The Municipality of Piagapo has achieved a significant milestone in agricultural innovation with the successful harvest of strawberries in Barangay Gacap. This initiative is a result of a collaborative program between the local government and the Mindanao State University (MSU) through its College of Agriculture.

The pilot project marks a breakthrough for the municipality, known for its diverse agricultural endeavors. Piagapo Mayor Ali Sumandar shared that the success of the initial harvest paves the way for a larger-scale cultivation, which is expected to provide economic opportunities for local farmers while enhancing food production in the area. Plans for mass cultivation are already in motion following the promising results of the pilot phase.

The strawberry project is an example of how partnerships between academic institutions and local governments can bring innovative solutions to rural communities. By utilizing the expertise of MSU’s College of Agriculture, Piagapo has been able to introduce a non-traditional crop into the local farming landscape. The cool climate and fertile soil of Barangay Gacap have proven conducive to strawberry farming, making it a viable option for expansion.

Beyond economic prospects, the harvest has also brought immediate joy to the local community. Some residents of Piagapo have enjoyed the fresh strawberries as part of their iftar meals during Ramadan, adding a sweet and nutritious treat to their traditional evening feast.

With the success of this project, Piagapo is set to explore further agricultural innovations that can sustain and uplift its farming communities. The local government’s commitment to expanding this initiative reflects a broader vision of enhancing food security, diversifying crop production, and promoting sustainable farming practices in the region.

As the municipality moves forward with mass cultivation, Piagapo’s strawberry venture stands as a model for other rural communities looking to explore new agricultural possibilities. This achievement demonstrates that with strategic partnerships and innovative approaches, local agriculture can thrive and provide meaningful benefits to farmers and consumers alike.
