In a landmark move in the battle against illegal drugs, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Regional Office 9 (PDEA RO9) spearheaded the destruction of PHP331,200,419.1 million worth of confiscated substances on February 12. This marks the largest destruction activity of dangerous drugs ever conducted in the region.

The event took place at Libertad Power and Energy Corporation in Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur, where seized illegal substances, including methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) and expired medicines classified as dangerous drugs, were incinerated using a thermal destruction method. The process adhered strictly to environmental and safety protocols to ensure responsible disposal. The destruction was conducted in compliance with court orders issued by the Regional Trial Courts of Pagadian City, Molave, Aurora, and Zamboanga City, in coordination with key government agencies and stakeholders.

The drugs destroyed comprised 48,689.6695 grams of shabu and 1,041 pieces of expired medicines. Notably, the haul included 21 and 16 kilos of shabu confiscated from two separate anti-drug operations in Zamboanga City last year.

PDEA RO9 Regional Director Maharani R. Gadaoni-Tosoc underscored the significance of this milestone, emphasizing the agency’s relentless commitment to eradicating illegal drugs. “This is a testament to our unwavering dedication to ensuring these confiscated substances will never reach the streets again,” she said. She also expressed gratitude to Libertad Power and Energy Corporation, as well as all officials and stakeholders who contributed to making the event possible.

Hon. Divina Grace C. Yu, 1st District Congresswoman of Zamboanga del Sur, served as the Guest of Honor and Speaker, while law enforcement officials, judiciary representatives, local government units, and other partner agencies, including members of the media, bore witness to the historic occasion. Their presence reaffirmed a collective resolve to combat illegal drugs in the region.

With this record-breaking destruction, PDEA RO9 continues to fortify its anti-drug campaign, reassuring the public of its steadfast commitment to fostering a drug-free community.
