Davao City, Philippines – In a step toward advancing sustainable energy in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Mindanao State University-Maguindanao (MSU-Maguindanao) collaborated with the Mindanao Renewable Energy R&D Center (MREC) for a writeshop aimed at developing renewable energy research proposals. The event, held on January 14-15, 2025, at Ateneo De Davao University, brought together key stakeholders, including the Ateneo De Davao University Center for Renewable Energy and Appropriate Technologies (ADDU-CREATE).

The activity focused on resource assessments and pilot testing of renewable energy solutions tailored to the needs of Ligawasan Marsh and nearby watershed communities. This initiative aligns with MSU-Maguindanao’s Renewable Energy Development (RED) Agenda and MREC’s mission to drive socio-economic progress through sustainable energy solutions across Mindanao.

Chancellor Bai Hejira Nefertiti M. Limbona emphasized the university’s commitment to addressing critical issues related to renewable energy access, environmental sustainability, and community empowerment. “Through partnerships like this, MSU-Maguindanao continues to play a vital role in creating meaningful solutions for Mindanao’s energy challenges,” Limbona said.

Key representatives from MSU-Maguindanao included Research Director Peter Jan D. De Vera, Assistant Professor Always B. Germo, Assistant Professor Monariza M. Khalid, Engineer Hazel Faith Sumera, and Engineer Jeanneflor S. Atong. Their active participation highlighted the institution’s dedication to fostering research and collaboration in renewable energy.

The writeshop underscored the importance of localized research in renewable energy development, with Ligawasan Marsh—a vital ecological and cultural hub in BARMM—serving as a focal point for pilot projects. By addressing the region’s unique needs, the consortium aims to create impactful, community-driven solutions that promote environmental conservation and socio-economic growth.

This initiative is a testament to the power of collaboration in achieving sustainable energy development in Mindanao, showcasing the potential for academic institutions and research centers to contribute to the region’s progress.
