Villanueva, Misamis Oriental – Two individuals suspected of stealing square copper wires from streetlights along the national highway in Villanueva were caught in the act, causing major disruptions and endangering public safety.

The suspects, identified as Erwin Canabal, 30, and Ronel Cabornay, 19, both residents of Ganghaan, Barangay Sta. Cruz, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, were apprehended by the Villanueva Municipal Police Station (MPS) in response to reports from concerned citizens.

The Crime

The theft occurred along a stretch of the national highway between Barangay San Martin and Barangay Poblacion, where the suspects had been targeting government-installed streetlights. Their activities resulted in the highway being plunged into darkness during the night, posing risks to commuters and pedestrians.

Local authorities, including the police and employees of the Villanueva local government unit (LGU), had been monitoring the suspects for some time. The decisive breakthrough came when residents reported the duo’s blatant theft, enabling law enforcement to apprehend them on the spot with stolen copper wires in tow.

Evidence and Arrest

Police recovered the following items from the suspects:

  • Approximately ₱25,000 worth of stolen copper wires
  • Tools used for the theft, including a wire cutter, hammer, and screwdriver

The suspects are now detained at the Villanueva Police Station, where they face charges of theft under the Revised Penal Code.

Villanueva Police Chief PMAJ Princess Bergado commended the vigilance and swift action of concerned citizens, which led to the timely arrest. The LGU also lauded the police for their prompt response and dedication to maintaining public safety.
