A Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) was successfully rescued and released through the concerted efforts of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Piñan and vigilant citizens in Zamboanga del Norte. The release took place on December 16, at Gratum Beach Resort in Barangay Guimputlan, Dapitan City.

The initiative was spearheaded by CENR Officer Adelaida R. Borja, DMO IV Engr. Camelo Arco, and EMS I Rose Ann Belotendos, along with their dedicated team. The marine turtle was initially spotted on December 14 by Mr. Jerry Eguia, a concerned citizen, in a fish corral in Panganoran, Sibutad. Recognizing the importance of conserving marine life, Mr. Eguia ensured the turtle’s safety by turning it over the following day to Forest Protection Officer (FPO) Marlon Cabilin in Linabo, Dapitan City.

Given that the turnover occurred on a Sunday, CENRO Piñan technical personnel provided Mr. Cabilin with basic handling procedures to ensure the turtle’s well-being. On Monday, a CENRO Piñan team conducted a thorough assessment, confirming that the rescued wildlife was a Green Sea Turtle in good health. The turtle’s carapace measured 43 cm in length and 41 cm in width, and it weighed approximately 10 kilograms. After deeming the turtle fit for release, the team coordinated its safe return to its natural habitat.

The Green Sea Turtle is classified as an endangered species under DAO 2019-09, the updated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna and their Categories. This species plays a vital role in marine ecosystems, contributing to the health of seagrass beds and coral reefs.

CENRO Piñan’s successful operation underscores the importance of community involvement in wildlife conservation. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) continues to encourage the public to report sightings or encounters with wildlife to ensure timely and appropriate action. Initiatives like this highlight the collective effort needed to protect and preserve the country’s rich biodiversity.
